The three options in brief
- Direct purchase: one buyer reviews the vehicles, makes an offer, and you agree terms for the group.
- Auction: you consign the vehicles to an in-person or online auction. Buyers bid, and the price is set on the day, less the auction’s fees.
- Individual sales: each vehicle is listed and sold on its own, privately or as a trade-in.
No option always gets the most money. The result depends on the vehicles, the market at the time, the terms, and how much work and waiting you’re willing to take on.

Side-by-side comparison
| What to consider | Direct purchase | Auction | Individual sales |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price certainty | Known once you accept a firm offer, though an offer may depend on an inspection or title checks. | Unknown until bidding ends. It depends on who bids that day. A reserve price protects a floor but can leave units unsold. | Negotiated vehicle by vehicle. Popular units may sell well; others may sit. |
| Your workload | One list, one negotiation and one handover plan. You still gather records and prepare the vehicles. | Consignment paperwork, and delivering the vehicles or arranging transport to the sale. | The most work: listings, calls, viewings, payments and paperwork for each vehicle. |
| Fees and transport | Ask whether anything is taken off the price, such as transport, and who arranges collection. | Seller fees, and sometimes transport, cleaning or listing costs. They vary by auction. | Advertising costs and staff time. A dealer trade-in is usually priced to cover the dealer’s costs. |
| Payment terms | Set out in the purchase agreement. | Paid after the sale, on the auction’s settlement terms. | Different for each buyer. Take care with how and when you’re paid. |
| Unsold units | An offer may cover all or only some of the vehicles. Ask about the rest. | Units that don’t reach the reserve may come back to you or go into a later sale. | Slow sellers stay on your books, insured and parked, until they go. |
| Inspection and condition | The buyer may inspect before a firm offer. Ask how findings affect the price. | Buyers bid on the vehicles as presented. Condition reports vary between auctions. | Each buyer inspects, and any condition dispute is handled one sale at a time. |
| Timeline | Depends on how quickly vehicle details, any inspection and the paperwork come together. | Depends on upcoming sale dates and how far ahead the auction needs the vehicles. | Usually the longest. Each vehicle sells on its own schedule. |
When each one tends to fit
- A direct sale tends to suit owners who want one buyer, one set of written terms and one handover, especially with vehicles at several sites or a fixed date to clear the yard.
- An auction tends to suit owners who want open bidding and can live with uncertainty on price and timing, or whose vehicles are in strong demand at auction.
- Individual sales tend to suit small groups, sellers with time to spare, or a few units that are in demand on their own.
Many owners get more than one quote. To judge a direct offer properly, read what goes into a fleet purchase offer and how the fleet purchase process works.
